Unit 1 - Exploring Emotions (from the Kindness Classroom: A Social Emotional Yearlong Curriculum)

This SEL curriculum program focuses on exploring emotions in the primary grades.

My goal is to provide easy-to-use lessons and resources to help teachers introduce children to the concept of emotions and how to recognize emotions in themselves and others. This is important for every child so that they can understand the actions of others, and choose the most appropriate actions for themselves.

These engaging, community-building activities give students the exposure and practice ESSENTIAL social skills needed to create a successful classroom environment.

♥ What’s included in UNIT 1 - Exploring Emotions

→ Storybook : Little Penguin’s Big Emotions The main character is a little penguin who wakes up each morning feeling a different emotion. His facial expression and body language reinforce these feelings. His friend Panda shows that emotions can change and that you can experience many within one day. In the end, Little Penguin write in his diary to review what he learned about big emotions.

→ There are five VISUAL lesson plans included which will walk you through each lesson topic making it very easy to implement. Each lesson has at least 5 different activities, and includes a teacher script to help guide your lesson. This saves teachers valuable time and lets them focus on the conversation, concepts, and ideas of their students during these valuable discussions.


About The Lessons

Each of the 5 lessons has five or more different activities. The lesson map has both a description of the activity, and picture of the activity or finished result. Group discussions for all 5 lessons include a teacher script to guide the conversation, with question and possible answers included.

After completing the 25+ activities in the unit, students will learn to:

♦ identify and label emotions in themselves, along with situations that may cause such feelings ourselves and others, expressing emotions in appropriate ways, personal emotions vs. others

♦ recognize emotions in others based on their facial expression, body language, words and actions

♦ realize that emotions are okay, but we have choices regarding how to react to them appropriately.

♦ realize that others may have different emotional reaction than you do about the same thing, and that understanding those personal differences leads to more empathy and harmony.

♦ realize that emotions are temporary and change often. It helps when dealing with sad or scary emotions to know that they will not be forever.

This unit explores respect for self, others, and the earth, respect for the classroom environment and materials, diversity, bullying, and assertiveness, community, culture

♥ UNIT 7 - Personal Responsibility
Storybook: Little Penguin Is Responsible
This unit explores being responsible, decision making, honesty, citizenship, integrity, classroom expectations, rights and responsibilities

♥ UNIT 8 - Attitude and Gratitude
Storybook: Little Penguin Looks On the Bright Side
This unit explores having a good attitude, optimism, happiness, appreciation, gratitude, and resilience
