  • These sketch notes are heat transfer worksheets for middle school science students learning about conduction, convection, and radiation
  • Sketch notes are great for interactive science notebooks and are visually engaging, have graphics, and are a concise way to cover middle school science topics in a clear and organized way. These thermal energy transfer notes provide a framework for students.
  • A 32-page slideshow (pdf and ppt) guides students as they fill out their notes and learn about thermal energy transfer, how heat and temperature affect the movement of molecules in solids, liquids, and gases, potential and kinetic energy, the Law of Conservation of Energy, conductors and insulators, and how mass impacts heat transfer
  • Claim Evidence Reasoning or CER questions on heat transfer and sample answers are included. CER science writing encourages critical thinking and is great for practice and assessment.
  • Simple thermal energy transfer lab using water, ice cubes, and thermometers along with an inquiry lab to change one thing.
  • Digital self-grading and printable options for a quiz are included

These notes work towards mastering NGSS MS-PS3-4

Plan an investigation to determine the relationships among the energy transferred, the type of matter, the mass, and the change in the average kinetic energy of the particles as measured by the temperature of the sample.

Works towards Utah SEEd 6.2.3

NGSSMS-PS3-4
Plan an investigation to determine the relationships among the energy transferred, the type of matter, the mass, and the change in the average kinetic energy of the particles as measured by the temperature of the sample. Examples of experiments could include comparing final water temperatures after different masses of ice melted in the same volume of water with the same initial temperature, the temperature change of samples of different materials with the same mass as they cool or heat in the environment, or the same material with different masses when a specific amount of energy is added. Assessment does not include calculating the total amount of thermal energy transferred.
