The World Where I Live...

This is a jam-packed, 40 page unit full of multi-sensory and multi-grade-level activities all centering on the relationships between the following concepts: city/town/village, county, state, country, continent, and community helpers. The following mathematical concepts are also explored: range, median, mode, and average (mathematical mean).
The following activities are included in this unit: Key vocabulary exercise, coloring Venn diagram activity, "Greater Than, Less Than" activity page, "My World War" center game or class game (full color and black-and-white versions included), "States I've Visited" self-study/class survey/analysis activities, "My Trip to" writing prompt activity, "Community Helper Interview Form," "Color My World" drawing activity, "The World Where I Live..." individual story template, and a practice page for writing individual full addresses.
This unit could be taught in as little as one week but could easily be stretched two weeks and beyond -- especially if supplemented with pertinent children's literature selections. It is also intended to cater to a variety of learning styles and ability levels in that many of the activities can be accomplished either individually or as a group. The unit also capitalizes on creating a visual picture of the geographical regions through the use of diagrams, individual student-created drawings (part-to-whole and whole-to-part instruction), quantity symbols, and, most uniquely, through the use of color association!
