What educators are saying

Great resource for engaging students in the reasons behind the U.S.'s involvement in World War I. Easy to implement. Great activity for group work.
I used this activity with small groups where they needed to examine the evidence and form an opinion. The activity really got them thinking and created a lively debate.

Description

Perhaps one of the most important events of World War One, the sinking of the Lusitania has fascinated kids and adults for years. Use this mystery to harness that fascination and engage students in an inquiry-based mission that they will remember all year long!

In this mystery, students are posed with an engaging scenario - they are CIA Agents that must piece together once and for all how and why the Lusitania sank. They are presented with a variety of "exhibits," all cleverly designed to engage students in higher-order thinking while also teaching them about the sinking of the Lusitania. Each exhibit is paired with a short series of open-ended constructed response questions. These questions are written at a variety of DOK levels, allowing you to get a more accurate picture of your students' understanding and challenge all of your learners.

After students have collected and analyzed each exhibit, they will create a multimedia presentation to "brief" the class on their findings.

It can be SO difficult to get away from "sit and get" lessons in Social Studies. Give students a chance to spread their investigative wings while still sticking to the standards!

This product includes:

  • Teacher Introduction - Provides suggestions for implementation
  • Student Introduction - Sets the stage for an engaging and FUN activity
  • Background Information - Builds a foundation for comprehension and success with two video clips and a short nonfiction passage
  • Four "Exhibits" - Exhibits include primary sources (propaganda poster, newspaper clippings, notice from German Embassy), and secondary sources (articles are written with an angle - great cross-curricular connection to author's purpose; articles include images and captions - hello, text features!).
  • Constructed Response Questions - Questions correspond with each exhibit and ask students to respond to questions written at a variety of DOK levels
  • Final Report - Prompts students to present their findings and draw their own conclusions about the sinking of the Lusitania in a multimedia presentation
  • Extension - Optional activity for further differentiation and a deeper challenge
  • Answer Key - Provides answers to constructed response questions
  • Scoring Rubric - Use this rubric to score students' final reports
