What educators are saying

I needed a last-minute lesson plan for a substitute teacher and this was perfect! Everything printed out beautifully and was easy to teach. The students were engaged in the movie and following along thanks to the questions being in order of events. I will definately use this again.

This 10 page movie guide with additional activities accompanies the film "The Book of Life (2014)" also known as "El libro de la vida".

This guide may also work well as a sub plan for your substitute teacher.

PART 1 – Comprehension Questions

• There are 25 questions altogether. I have made two sets for differentiation. One set is multiple choice and the other is long answer. They are both in chronological order and include answers. I like to act out the scenes to the younger kids to give clues and help. It's great fun with kids. The multiple choice questions have also worked well with my ESL students.

PART 2 - One page is just for fun.

• There is a word search with 17 words and a calavera ready to be designed and colored.

PART 3 - Character profiles. For a group of 3 if too much for one child.

• There are 3 character profiles to complete. Students draw a profile picture, describe their features and personality, then write what they like and dislike about that character. Includes the characters Maria, Manolo and Joaquin.

This movie is about Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart, embarks on an adventure that spans three fantastic worlds where he must face his greatest fears.

Great to watch before Halloween or Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) or to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

How can movies help students learn English?

Learning from movies is motivating and enjoyable

- Sometimes students need a change in style, and movies are generally an integral

part of a student's life.

Movies provides authentic and varied language

- It's always a good idea to introduce students examples of English in real

situations. This includes accents different to your own.

Movies gives a visual context

- This gives the student the ability to interpret the language in full visual context.

To see such visual supports as facial expressions and gestures simultaneously.

Variety and flexibility

- Movies can also act as a springboard for follow-up tasks such as discussions,

debates on social issues, role plays, reconstructing a dialogue or summarising.
