    2. The Book of Life Movie Guide

This is a 10 page movie guide for grades 1-4

    PART 1 – Comprehension Questions

    • There are 25 questions altogether. I have made two sets for the higher and lower grades. One set is multiple choice and the other is long answer. They are both in chronological order and include answers. I like to act out the scenes to the younger kids to give clues and help. It's great fun with kids.

PART 2 - One page is just for fun.

    • There is a word search with 17 words and a calavera ready to be designed and colored.

PART 3 - Character profiles. For a group of 3 if too much for one child.

    • There are 3 character profiles to complete. Students draw a profile picture, describe their features and personality, then write what they like and dislike about that character. Includes the characters Maria, Manalo and Joaquin.

    ------------------------------------------------------

    * Includes a black and white version *

    ------------------------------------------------------

This movie is about Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart, embarks on an adventure that spans three fantastic worlds where he must face his greatest fears.

Great to watch before Halloween or Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos)

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    3. Hocus Pocus

This is a 10 page movie guide for grades 7-10

    This includes:

    • 5 discussion questions about witches

    • Reading passage about the Salem Witch Trials

    • 10 comprehension questions for the reading passage

    • 30 comprehension questions for the movie in chronological order. (2 sets for differentiation)

    • Potion making

    • Answers for Part 1, 2 and 3 included

    ------------------------------------------------------

    * Includes a black and white version *

    ------------------------------------------------------

Part 1 and Part 2 are tasks to be done before watching the movie. The hope is to get the students more motivated for the movie and questions ahead.

    • PART 1 – There are 5 questions about witches that need to be completed within 20 minutes. Afterwards discuss as a class getting opinions from the students about witches. Talk about the Salem witch trials here too.

    • PART 2 – Students to read the passage about the Salem Witch Trials and then complete 10 reading comprehension questions.

    • PART 3 – There are 30 comprehension questions altogether. I have made two sets for differentiation. One set is multiple choice with 3 possible answers, and the other is full sentence answers. In chronological order with answer keys. The multiple choice questions have also worked well with my ESL students.

    • PART 4 – Students are to make a truly wicked/awesome potion using mysterious, weird or downright disgusting ingredients. They need to also include what it does and the directions on how to make it.

This movie is about the Sanderson sisters who were hanged for practicing witchcraft 300 years ago in Salem. Returning to life thanks to a combination of a spell spoken before their demise and the accidental actions of Max, the new kid, the witches have one Halloween night to secure their continuing existence.

How can movies help students learn English?

Learning from movies is motivating and enjoyable

    - Sometimes students need a change in style, and movies are generally an integral

    part of a student's life.

Movies provides authentic and varied language

    - It's always a good idea to introduce students examples of English in real

situations. This includes accents different to your own.

    Movies gives a visual context

    - This gives the student the ability to interpret the language in full visual context.

To see such visual supports as facial expressions and gestures simultaneously.

    Variety and flexibility

    - Movies can also act as a springboard for follow-up tasks such as discussions,

debates on social issues, role plays, reconstructing a dialogue or summarising.
