Learning Objective
Students will review mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism and then practice identifying examples of each by selecting the correct answer from choices and using their answer to select the correct color to use on a color by number answer sheet.
Description
Give students practice analyzing symbiotic relationships to determine if they are examples of commensalism, mutualism, or parasitism, using this non-fiction reading passage with questions and color-by-number answer sheet. Engage BOTH sides of the brain with the content!
You’ll receive:
• An information page that defines symbiosis, lists the three main types of symbiotic relationships and gives an example of each.
• A worksheet containing examples of each type of symbiotic relationship. The worksheet requires students to determine which type of symbiotic relationship is shown by the example. Their answer choice tells them what color to use for the color-by-number answer sheet.
• A full-page color by number picture of a clownfish and an anemone – a perfect example of a symbiotic relationship.
Students of all ages will enjoy this activity. I hear from teachers all the time about older students enjoying my color-by-number activities as much as younger students do!
One of the best things about this kind of activity (aside from the increased student engagement) is that grading them is a snap! Errors made on the worksheet show up in the coloring of the picture. You’ll instantly see where student confusion may exist. But even better than that is the fact that students doing color-by-number answer sheets will stop if they see that the color they are about to use doesn’t make any sense for that section of the picture. They’ll go back, re-read the example, reflect on their answer choice, and self-correct it!. No other kind of worksheet ever has that effect!
This activity is perfect for a quick lesson on symbiosis or a fun assessment of learning, but is also great for use by a substitute, or to give as make-up work for a student who has been absent.
I encourage you to take a look at the preview, which shows every single page of the resource and will help you make a good decision about the suitability of this resource for your students.
