Learning Objective

A- Students will determine the meanings of words that contain the suffixes -ful, -less, -er, and -est. B- Students will determine the meanings of words that contain the suffixes -ness, -ess, -tion, -ly, and -able.

Description

This engaging activity puts a fun spin on learning suffixes! Students complete worksheets where they identify and define the suffixed words in each sentence. It also makes a creative bulletin board or school hallway display! It can even be used as a valuable addition to your students' interactive notebooks!

Students begin by completing one or both of the worksheets. Each worksheet consists of 13 sentences. Each sentence has one or two suffixes embedded within the sentence. Students circle the suffixed words and write the meaning of each word on the line that follows. Then, they begin to assemble their craftivity. One each hot air balloon, students define each suffix and rewrite five words from their worksheet. Then, they color and cut out the balloons and clouds as directed, and glue them to a sheet of construction paper.

This resource contains two versions so that it can be differentiated and used with multiple grade levels. Suffixes included in the version I would use with second and third graders are:

-er (as "more")

-est

-ful

-less

-er (as "a person who")

Suffixes included in the version I would use with fourth and fifth graders are the suffixes listed above AND:

-able

-ness

-ess

-tion

-ly

This suffixes resource includes detailed instructions for your students to follow. It also includes a teacher instruction page that lists the exact materials you need to prepare for this craftivity.
