Learning Objective

Students will determine the meanings of words that contain the suffixes -ful, -less, -er, -est, and -able.

Description

Having a solid understanding of suffixes, prefixes, and roots is imperative when it comes to helping our students build a strong vocabulary. This set of three worksheets provides many opportunities for your students to interact with six common suffixes. Repetition is key to retention, and this worksheet packet contains a variety of exercises where your students will write the meaning of each suffix again and again. Furthermore, any of these engaging worksheets can be used as a pretest or posttest to check your students' understanding of these six basic suffixes. This resource is ready for you to just print and go! Answer keys are included. Each worksheet consists of two pages and can be printed back-to-back to create a single 2-sided worksheets.

Worksheet #1 includes 20 words. Most of the words contain suffixes, but a few of the words do not (e.g. winter, bless, disaster). The directions instruct students to split the word into the two boxes (one for the base word and one for the suffix). Then, students write the meaning of the suffixed word in the right margin space.

Worksheet #2 consists of 13 sentences. Students must circle the suffixed words and then write the meaning of each word on the line. Most sentences include more than one suffixed word. When your students complete this worksheet, they will have identified the meanings of 24 words.

Worksheet #3 features a pair of friendly letters exchanged between a young girl and her aunt. Students must try to find all of the suffixed words that end with -er, -est, -ful, -less, or -able. Then, they write the meaning of each word on the lines below the letter.

Suffixes include:

  • ful
  • less
  • er (as "more")
  • est
  • able
  • er (as "a person")
