Description
Preparing for student-led conferences? Guide your students toward setting realistic goals by reflecting on their work so far this year. This is a newspaper-style self-reflection activity designed to help middle school students reflect on their progress and set behavior-specific goals. I designed this to help my students prepare for student-led conferences in 6th grade, but it could be used for traditional conference preparation or a mid-year student self-reflection project.
This booklet/newspaper has been successful in my classroom and in my fellow middle school teacher's classrooms. Middle grade students often struggle with self-reflection, but this makes the process more fun...and colorful! (Yup....Middle school kids still like to color!)
Here are the tasks students are asked to complete.
Fill in and color a student ID Card
Write out their daily schedule
Check off accomplishments they have made (from a prewritten list)
Select and draw three people who support their work and effort at school (friends, parents, teachers).
Reflect on how they use their time before and after the school day starts and how this might impact their school work.
Cut and paste a sample from their student planner that shows how they write down assignments daily.
Reflect on and self-rate their class participation in core area classes.
Write SPECIFIC goals in the areas of:
Homework Completion
Organization
Study Habits
Class Participation
Report Card Grades
Extracurricular Activities
Friendships/Social interactions
Exercise/Health/Nutrition
Make a list of the traits of their best teacher (these are usually pretty funny).
Share their TV watching interests and habits (makes for a great talking point when conferencing with teens) and music likes and interests.
NOW includes an ADOBE version with some blanks to customize the title and directions for your students!!!
