Rhythms and Ratios Bundle: STEAM Flashcards for Fractions

Combining fraction operations with musical notation and symbol decoding, these flashcards are a challenging, brain-twister review for middle school and early high school math students.

This set includes over 730 flashcards covering addition, subtraction, and multiplication, and is graded by increasing difficulty. The first groups review simple fraction operations, while later categories integrate fractions with musical notes; the final categories integrate like and unlike denominators, fractions and notes, and require the student to associate the border color with the correction operation (blue for addition, green for subtraction, and purple for multiplication.

STEAM Education is a model that reintegrates the Arts into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Education to collectively drive modern innovation. Research has consistently demonstrated that STEAM-educated students score higher on tests, are more likely to attend school regularly, and more well-rounded individuals.

This set of flashcards follows the trend of STEAM Education by combining fraction knowledge with a musical application of fractions: rhythm. In addition to improving fluency adding fractions, students will be exposed to common rhythmic notation and learn the fractional equivalencies of these notes.

Answer keys are included for all flashcards. I suggest gluing the corresponding answers to the back of the flashcards and laminating the cards; another (more printer-friendly) option would be simply to write the answer on the back of each card before laminating.
