#homestretch Do you need ready to use lessons and worksheets to teach the r-controlled vowel sounds for first, second, or third grade students? This phonics unit focuses on instruction about the r-controlled vowel sound made by the letters AR, ER IR UR, OR, AIR, and EAR plus other r-controlled vowel sound spelling patterns.
The reading unit includes r controlled vowel teacher lesson plans, student practice pages, an assessment, answer keys, and a slide show (Power Point and Google Slides versions are included) with five parts for teaching the r controlled vowels phonics sound spelling patterns.

This unit focuses on a skill taught primarily in 1st through 3rd grade. However, it was created for all learners in mind regardless of age of student so theme and clipart were kept neutral, so that a 6 year old can be equally as engaged in the learning as a 10 year old.

The reading unit includes 5 parts:

1. Introduction of the Phonics Focus
2. Phonemic Awareness
3. Encoding
4. Decoding
5. Review and Assess

Each part of the phonics unit has:

1. presentation slides (Google Slides and PPT)
2. student practice page
3. teacher lesson plan notes

The teaching notes/lesson plans share activities for each day that can fit into your schedule whether you see students daily or not. The teaching notes also provide feedback for how to correct students who are struggling AND extra resources for more practice. Each day has suggested free resources to use for reteaching or extra practice for readers.

This reading curriculum was created to get students reading and uses the best methods for struggling readers.  It encompasses all parts of the phonics pattern to ensure student mastery: phonemic awareness, encoding, and decoding. Real and minimal contrast words are included to check for sound code capabilities.

The phonics unit provides a week-long set of anchor activities to bind your phonics instruction together. They are flexible to be modified for your students' needs and your existing phonics resources will easily fit as additions into the five parts of the unit. The student pages should provide easy classwork and quiz grades for your assessment records.
