Description

Who doesn't like to treat themselves out to a great meal? This engaging real world math activity will captivate your students as they practice adding, subtracting, multiplying, creating a budget, making change, and calculate percent. This activity also provides students with a functional reading opportunity.

Each student is given a budget to spend on their food for the day. Their expenses must also include tax and tip. Students will get to dine out on two separate days. The first day is with their friends. As long as they stay on budget, they can purchase what ever they want. The second day they are with an adult. Now, they must make healthy choices.

The following skills are practiced before the students make their menu selections

  • basic computation (addition, subtraction, multiplication)
  • estimating
  • making change (using the least amount of coins)
  • determining tax and tip with percentages (calculators can be used with younger students)

There are two levels of difficulty for each practice page to better meet the needs of your students. Answer keys for each page are provided.

A rubric is also included to be used as an assessment of their menu choices.

My students just love this activity! They devote so much time to planning their meals, I often feel bad that I don't have any food to give them. Pack a great lunch for yourself on the days you teach this unit. You will get hungry too!!!
