    This Ontario Grade 4/5 Social Studies Strand A unit was created to meet the expectations of the revised 2018 Ontario Social Studies Curriculum for Strand A:

    The blended format of this resource allows teachers to teach one lesson to both grades, while still meeting the curriculum expectations in a structured manner. The societies looked at for each grade level are different, but are explored in similar manners. While you may want to use a variety of supplemental materials, this resource contains student-friendly texts for each lesson.

    Part 1: How Do Societies Grow? focuses on the big ideas of the curriculum, with the Early Aztecs being the main focus for Grade 4, while the early Haudenosaunee are explored by Grade 5. It explores:

    Part 2: How Do Societies Change? addresses the specific expectations that were included in the 2018 curriculum honouring the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. With that focus in mind, this unit concentrates on the experiences of the First Nation, Inuit and Metis cultures in the area of what would eventually become Canada. The Grade 4 curriculum now asks students to learn about "at least one First Nation and one Inuit society" while the Grade 5 curriculum includes the experiences of the Metis society.
