What educators are saying

Absolutely a life saver! My students and I enjoyed it so much that I ended purchasing the 3/4 bundle this year. Excellent resource and content.
This is my first year teaching social studies and so far it has been really helpful as a jumping off point for my lessons. I love that their are paper and paperless versions that we can use depending on the task.

    Description

Are you a split-Grade 4/5 teacher looking for engaging social-studies activities that don't require jumping between the two grades? Need both in-class AND online resources to meet the needs of distance learning or to meet specific IEP expectations for accommodated students? Check out this full-year digital and printable bundle, created to meet the Ontario Social Studies Curriculum expectations! The blended format of these units allow you to teach both grades with one lesson using the "big ideas" of the curriculum, with follow-up grade-specific student texts and tasks.

    This bundle includes:

Strand A: Early Societies / Interactions of Indigenous Peoples & Europeans

Ontario Gr. 4/5 Social Studies: Strand A, Heritage & Identity (Printable Version)

Ontario Gr. 4/5 Social Studies: Strand A, Heritage & Identity (Digital Version for Use with Google Slides™️)

Strand B: Political & Physical Regions of Canada / The Role of Government and Responsible Citizenship

Ontario Gr. 4/5 Social Studies: Strand B, People & Environments (Printable Version)

Ontario Gr. 4/5 Social Studies: Strand B, People & Environments (Digital Version for Use with Google Slides™️)

These units were created using a "blended" format, which means they were specifically designed for a split grade 4/5 class. It is NOT two Grade 4 units and 2 Grade 5 units.

    Printable Versions Include:

✔ 3-part lesson plans, with specific curriculum expectations noted (in the printable version only)

✔ hyperlinks to relevant videos and websites

    ✔ assessment tools

    ✔ answer keys

    ✔ student-friendly texts and tasks

    ✔ examples of student projects

    Digital Versions Include:

    • ability for students to use Google Read and Write to listen to texts

    • text that is 95% editable

    • space for students type responses to tasks

    • hyperlinks to relevant websites and videos

    • movable pieces

The digital versions are companion pieces for the printable versions, making it seamless to move between the two resources!

    Strand A :

Part 1: How Do Societies Grow? focuses on the big ideas of the curriculum, with the Early Aztecs being the main focus for Grade 4, while the early Six Nations are explored by Grade 5. It explores:

    ►Cause & Consequence

    ►Primary Evidence

    ►How to Ask Good Questions

    ►Environmental Features

    ►Beliefs and Religions

    ►Daily Life

    ►Social Organization

    ►Geography & Mapping

Part 1 includes a "flipbook" in which students record their learning as the unit progresses.

Part 2: How Do Societies Change? was written to address the specific expectations that were included in the 2018 curriculum honouring the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. With that focus in mind, this unit concentrates on the experiences of the First Nation, Inuit and Metis cultures in the area of what would eventually become Canada. The Grade 4 curriculum now asks students to learn about "at least one First Nation and one Inuit society" while the Grade 5 curriculum includes the experiences of the Metis society.

This resource allows students to develop their understanding of the following Concepts of Social Studies Thinking as they explore how societies changed as a result of European influences, and how societies are alike and different from each other and from our lives today:

    Strand B

Teachers can instruct both grades at once, with each grade level having a slightly different focus:

Grade 4: will look at how human activity affects the environment, and vice versa, in different regions, provinces, and territories.

✪ Grade 5: will explore how various levels of government are involved in these environmental issues.

This unit was created using a "backward-design" model, with students finishing the unit with projects that reflect the big ideas of the curriculum. In the original PDF version of this unit, there are four

    Final project choices:

    • Poster
    • Scrapbook
    • Brochure
    • Cube

In this digital version of the unit, the choices have been reduced to 2, due to the project formats: Poster or Scrapbook (There are appropriate slides for these projects included directly in this digital resource.)

    Activities:

    ► Mapping

    ► Drag and Drop Slides

    ► Exit Tickets

    ► Quiz

    ► Chat Stations

    ► Culminating Projects

    Frequently Asked Questions:

What will I need to assign this resource to my students?

    You will require:

    ❶ Access to the internet

    ❷ A Google Drive Account

Why does TPT need access to my Google Drive account for this bundle ?

TPT will ONLY add the resources to your Google Drive, and will not be able to change anything in your Drive. This process ensures that you receive your own, individual copies of these resources.

If your school district does not allow resources to be added in this way, you can still purchase the resource. Here are two options for you to consider dealing with this issue:

❶ Use a personal gmail address, if you have one, to access the resource. Then you can simply share the folder from your personal Google Drive over to your school Google Drive account!

    OR

❷ Email me directly with your TPT name, date of purchase, order number, and email address. Once I have verified the purchase, I will send you copies of the resources directly (although it may take me a couple of days to do this).

    My email address is: coachsteachingcorner@gmail.com

I already own your original Grade 4/5 Strand B Social Studies unit. Why should I consider purchasing this digital version?

The digital resources completely align with the regular units. This makes it extremely easy to meet IEP accommodations for specific students with little effort on your part.

✔ The digital resources are paperless, which is perfect if your school administrator is asking you to cut down on photocopying!

✔ The saturated, full-colour interactive slides are engaging for students.

✔ It's easy to implement with distance learning.

✔ It's just fun to use!

    Can I edit this resource?

I have left 95% of the texts in editable form for two reasons:

➀ to ensure that students are able to use Google Read & Write with the activities.

➁ to allow teachers to edit texts and tasks when they feel it suitable for their class or to address IEP accommodations for specific students.

How do I collect student work?

Your students will simply complete their own copies of the lessons, and turn it into your platform (ie. Google Classroom).
