What educators are saying

I used this with my 6th graders. The video instruction was clear and easy to follow. The lab report was easy to use. Definitely a resource I would use again for this unit on thermohaline.

Description

This bundle contains a high-quality video demonstration, detailed teacher preparation plans and a 4-page student handout! Students will watch the video demonstration and then carry out the experiment. See how to create a simulated ocean current by letting colored water flow out of a pinhole in a paper cup into a surrounding tub of water. Then watch up close as we let a red warm water current encounter a blue cold water current to see how the warm water layer rises to the surface and the cold water layer sinks to the bottom. In an accompanying control demonstration, two colored water currents of the same temperature encounter each other and do not separate into layers. Students learn about ocean currents and by extension about air currents, and they learn how pressure drives the flow of water. The activity is carried out using a guided scientific method; students will make a hypothesis, identify independent and dependent variables and controls, carry out the experiment, make notes and sketches, and draw conclusions. This resource contains a 2-page teacher preparation plan and a 4-page student handout as well as a high-quality, 5-minute video demonstration.
