Description

This film guide accompanies the Netflix film, “Shirley,” about Shirley Chisholm’s campaign for U.S. President in 1972. It contains two options to provide teachers with easy differentiation. One version is 45 questions with 50 total answers (5 pages), for even grading points. The second version is 20 questions (2 pages). Both versions contain time stamps and an answer key. This film is not only an excellent choice for African-American history and women's history but also a great example to show U.S. Government and American History classes about the process for a presidential campaign in the United States primary election. Shirley Chisholm may not have won the 1972 presidential democratic nomination, but her historical example–both as the first black woman in Congress and the first serious black democratic candidate for U.S. president– of facing opposition in a political campaign with grace and grit is an important story every student should learn about.

WARNING: This video does contain some derogatory language as Shirley Chisholm encountered racism during the campaign.
