How are mystery stories taught? What are the elements of mystery writing? Unpack the "mystery" of creative mystery narrative writing with your students with L-EA's no-prep Mystery Writing Workshop. My scaffolded activities teach the art of mystery writing from appreciation and analysis to planning and publishing!

Writing mysteries is great natural practice for learning all of the important elements of narrative structure: setting, characters, conflict, rising action, climax, and conclusion. These detailed topic descriptions, notes, activities, worksheets, and rubrics take your class step-by-step through the process of learning these important elements of narrative writing.

This 34-page unit includes the following:

  • Lesson Plans for a 3-week unit (your class may easily need 4-5 weeks, however, so plan with your class in mind)
  • A Planning Packet that includes the short story "The Pearl Necklace" (with guiding questions), notes on the elements of strong mystery writing, and a step-by-step guide to planning an original mystery story
  • 4 drafting activities with accompanying rubrics
  • A final essay assignment handout that includes descriptions of famous mystery stories, general narrative writing tips, a peer edit checklist, and Common Core aligned 90-point rubric tied to EIGHT Common Core Standards
  • A link to an editable rubric that allows for grading customization and seamless integration into Google Classroom and many other Learning Management Systems (LMS's)
  • An additional peer editing guidelines worksheet and peer review assignment (tied to one CCSS standard)
  • An additional final narrative rubric (also not Common Core aligned)
  • Ratings guide for student presentations
