This 6 week long Music in Film Unit includes 6 major activities. Each activity includes a PowerPoint, Activity Sheets, Videos and Audio. Activities include how film composers write theme music, character theme music, story setting themes and world music, choosing appropriate theme music, student compositions of theme music for characters, and guessing theme music to popular films. This lesson includes how instruments, dynamics, tempo, are used in theme music to represent characters and places. This lesson is also a great way for students to understand the importance of world music as it influences cinematic music in films that take place in different parts of the world.

Activity 1: Introduction to Scoring Theme Music

Students are shown three characters in a short film that are accompanied by theme music. Students discuss and document in their activity sheets the how certain instruments, dynamics, and tempo are used in theme music to represent the characteristics of those characters.

Activity 2: Character Theme Music

Students are shown six characters who is accompanied with theme music. Students explore more characteristics in music that can be used to represent those characters. Students document and discuss the characteristics of the music, and how they accurately portray the characters in the scenes.

Activity 3: Story Setting Theme Music

Students are shown six story settings that are accompanied with theme music. Students continue to document and discuss characteristics in music that can be used to represent different parts of the world. This is a great way for your students to understand the importance in world music, and the role it plays in influencing cinematic music for films that take place in different parts of the world.

Activity 4: Choosing Appropriate Theme Music

Students are given ownership over their decisions for theme music for characters in this activity. Students are shown various characters such as pirates, babies, clowns, wizards, soldiers, knights, scientists, ghosts, aliens, astronauts and more. Students document and discuss which out of the three characters is most suitable for the theme music

Activity 5: Composing Theme Music

Out of the 12 characters students were introduced to in the previous activity, students must pick one character and compose a theme song for that character. Body percussion is great for teachers with limited resources, as tempo and dynamics were previously discussed in this lesson as huge factors when it comes to character theme music.

Activity 6. Guess The Theme Music Game

This unit ends with a very fun activity which students listen to theme music from movies, and see if they can know which movies they are from by listening. Students listen 13 different theme songs from popular films, and tally how many they got correct at the end. Music for this activity is not provided, as I do not have ownership to these big film titles! ~YouTube is a great place for you to access the music for this activity, which will be the only prep you'll have to do for this entire 6 week program. Save this activity for last, as it is the most fun for students!
