This is the Music in Film Curriculum Mega Bundle! This Music in Film Curriculum provides you with one full school year worth of Music in Film lessons! As students engage throughout this curriculum, they will engage in learning all of the most fundamental music concepts such as the musical instruments, instrument families, dynamics, tempo, texture, song form, musical genres, composition, composers and more!
This curriculum includes 20 Film Composer Worksheet Activities which work great for Substitute Teachers with no musical knowledge.
This Music in Film Curriculum is split into 11 Units, each unit lasting between 2-4 weeks. Each unit includes multiple printable activities to go along with each lesson. Each unit also includes Video Files and Audio Files which are automatically embedded in the Slideshows. A full description of each unit is listed below, and is also featured in this product preview.
Unit 1. Music in Film - The Importance of Music in Film
The first unit serves as an introductory to all the other units ahead. Students get a small taste of theme music, how music can be deceptive, sound effects, instrumentation, scoring, films with and without music, script writing to cinematic music, and more.
Unit 2. Music in Film - Theme Music in Movies
Students experience how theme music is created for characters. Students also engage in utilizing whatever instruments you have at your disposal to create theme songs for various characters which are provided as well. Body percussion is also always an option of course! This unit ends with a very fun activity which students listen to theme music from movies, and see if they can know which movies they are from by listening.
Unit 3. Music in Film - How Music Deceives us
Students will explore how film composers can change how the audience views a character based off the choice of music. Students will be deceived as they watch a clip of characters with uplifting music, only to watch the same clip a second time with suspicious sounding music and change their opinions of that character. Students explore how whole films can also change once the music changes. Students end the unit by engaging in choosing music for short films that they see most appropriate.
Unit 4. Music in Film - The Art of Instrumentation
Students explore how different instruments can be used to represent small characters, big characters, and events that take place in films. Student choose which instrument would best represent characters or events to several short films in this unit. Students end the unit by creating a piece of music that represents several soundscapes which are provided. Body Percussion works great for educators with limited instruments at their disposal!
Content learning in this lesson includes:
String Instruments
Brass Instruments
Woodwind Instruments
Percussion instruments
Unit 5. Music in Film - The Art of Sound Effects
Students learn about how in most films we watch, most sounds we hear are due to the Art of Foley. Students learn about the Art of Foley by watching artists create sound effects for a short film. Students later create sound effects for very short clips (bird flapping wings) or (footsteps). Students end this unit with a fun activity which involves them searching the classroom for objects they will use to create sound effects for an entire short film (clip by clip).
Unit 6. Music in Film - Movie Genres & Music Genres
This unit is similar to unit 3, as it shows students how music can change a film but on a more advanced level. Students learn and get to know each genre of music and the exact effect those genres have when it comes to characters, events, or films as a whole. Students compare and contrast genres, and choose which genre would be most suitable for several short films.
Content learning in this lesson includes:
Rock
Hip-Hop
Jazz
Reggae
Classical
Country
Funk
Pop
Unit 7. Music in Film - Scoring With The Musical Elements
This lesson builds off unit 4, as students engage in how dynamics, tempo, and texture is used in film music. Students watch several short films clip by clip as the music reacts with different dynamics, tempo, and texture. Whether these elements of music react to characters or events in the film, students get a great understanding of how film composers work.
The final activity students will see a movie with no music, and will be prompted what dynamics, tempo, and texture they would use clip by clip.
Content learning in this lesson includes:
Piano
Pianissimo
Mezzo Piano

Unit 8. Music in Film - Song Form & Story Form
This unit is heavy on ELA, as students will be shown the relation to song form and story form (ABA). Students begin this lesson being introduced to Story Setting, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Story Resolution. As students listen to several different cinematic music examples, they are prompted to design a main character, a villain, a hero, several story settings, a climax, and a story resolution (on their guided activity sheets).
Content learning in this lesson includes:
ABA
Exposition
Development
Recapitulation
Setting
Rising Action
Climax
Falling Action
Resolution
An elementary level version of this resource is provided with only Main Character, Story Setting, Climax, and Story Resolution sections included.
Unit 9. Music in Film - Musically Inspired Dialogue
This unit is also heavy on ELA. From the experiences students have had in previous units about which music is appropriate for characters or events, this unit focuses on what music would be appropriate for certain conversations. Students must decide what music is most suitable for dialogue. Students also listen to multiple cinematic music examples and are prompted to write a dialogue based off the music they hear. Students share the dialogues they write while the music is playing with a partner, or perform to the whole class.
Unit 10 - Music in Film Debate - Do Movies Need Music To Survive?
Students end the music in film curriculum with a debate whether films need music in order to be successful. This unit starts out with several clips with and then without music. Students will recognize that music sparks emotions of laughter, sadness, intensity, inspiration and more emotions when we watch films. When students watch each of films a second time without music, they will notice that many of those emotions disappear. The debate includes constructing evidence, an opening statement, a closing argument, and a positive reflection of their opponents. It's great to split the class in 3 groups (Pro, Con, Jury), and do this activity several times so all students experience each side/role.
Unit 11 - Music in Film - Film Composers Studies
This unit includes 10 activities for Hans Zimmer and 10 activities for John Williams. Activities include Pen Pal Activities, listening logs, KWL, Social Media Profiles, Bio Activities, Story Writing, Composer Rating, and Musically Inspired Drawing. These are strictly paper-based printable activities that will supply you with weeks and weeks of composer activities with your students. These paper based activities are also great for a lifetime of substitutes!
