As music teachers we can sometimes forget that it is important to touch on the art of sound. Students are taken through the journey of creating sound effects for movies. The lesson plan focuses on The Art of Foley, and reenacting sound effects we see in several short films. Students learn the importance of the use of dynamics, tempo, timing, accuracy, and readiness as they perform sound effects for short films in real time individually or in groups.

Activity 1:

Students begin brainstorming what objects could be used to recreate sound effects for small individual objects/animals/vehicles/people behind a green screen. Students aim to think creatively of objects they do not see in the clip that could be used as replacement objects to create similar sounds.

Activity 2:

Students scavenge the classroom for objects to recreate sound effects for the clips. Students can work individually, or in groups. When students have their objects ready they perform the sound effects for each clip using the materials they have gathered. 4 minute timers are provided in the Slideshow at your convenience.

Activity 3:

Students watch a short clip of an actual short film, and scavenge the classroom to search for objects they can use to recreate sound effects for the short film. This short film is split into 8 small sections to give students time and preparation for their sound effects creations.

Activity 4.

Students recreate sound effects for the same short film from start to finish, no stops. These short films that run from start to finish include fun music to make it more fun and cinematically realistic. Students experience the importance of readiness, timing, and sound accuracy as they perform the sound effects for the full film in real time.

Activity 5.

At this point, your students have most likely mastered the process of watching, scavenging, and performing sound effects. I included three alternative short films for your students to create sound effects for after they have finished activity 4. This would be a fun experience for your students to come back each week and get working on their next film!
