Fun PUZZLEs: Types of Triangles
Description
This CUBE AND STACK PUZZLE asks student teams of three to identify scalene, equilateral, and isosceles triangles using sides. Each student gets a different cube template (1 of 3). Each student in the team cuts out and constructs their cube. They then work together to stack their 3 cubes so that facing sides describe the same triangle. It is challenging, but my students think it's fun. I've used this activity for review, to teach a concept after a brief introduction, in after school help sessions, and to assist students who want to make a set of cubes to help them study. A set of templates for extra credit is available if students finish their daily work early.
Cube 1 lists the triangles (scalene, equilateral, and isosceles). Cube 2 has pictures of triangles. Cube 3 gives information about congruent sides, and vertex. Each cube has 6 sides, so some information on the sides may distract students. You need to know that all information, on all sides of the cube, is about triangles, (i.e. Triangles are named by the letter next to each vertex).
After the stack is correct, students have a worksheet to complete and submit.
Your purchase includes a sample lesson plan, directions, three colorful templates (which reproduce nicely in black and white) with students directions and objective/question of the day, and a worksheet with answer key. It also has the key for the correct stack formation.
Run off a set of templates for each team. (Remember, Black and white works as well as color and students can color). Our school uses cheap copy paper and it works fine. Each team will need scissors and glue.
One reminder, some students are going to make perfect cubes, others are not, but the learning, teamwork, and thinking are the focus. Have students help each other. There are always a few "cube building" whiz kids that can help.
I offer other PUZZLE sets, and find that 4 CUBE AND STACK PUZZLES during the year increases motivation in class.
