Description

This activity is designed for use with Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous speech, "I've Been to the Mountaintop". This activity works well with a middle school or high school level. It can be adapted to the English classroom or Social Studies classroom. It will work for in-person as well as remote/virtual learners! It is especially relevant if used near or on Martin Luther King Jr Day.

Included in this activity are the following 6 digital items:

  • Google Doc assignment -- students must analyze the speech in order to locate examples of rhetorical strategies (Ethos, Logos, Pathos), as well as additional rhetorical devices (allusion, repetition, anecdote, irony, extended metaphor).
  • Digital copy of speech transcript
  • Link to the audio of MLK's speech recording
  • Annotation Key (for students to digitally annotate the speech transcript using a color-coded highlighting system OR for hard copies - a symbol identification system)
  • Resource Slideshow #1 - A review of persuasive appeals (ethos, logos, pathos)
  • Resource Slideshow #2 - Review of the additional rhetorical strategies/devices
