What educators are saying

The resource was great and easy to use. I like that the students could compare and analyze each picture. Teaching from various perspectives helps students gain a whole understanding.
This was a great resource to show the dark side of Manifest Destiny. While Ghast's painting kind of hints at the negative, this assignment really showed Manifest Destiny from another side.

Description

Manifest Destiny- two different perspectives

This is a great interactive Google Slides lesson that will provide a more in-depth understanding around the different perspectives around Manifest Destiny. Students will first analyze the painting titled American Progress by John Gast in 1872.

Next students will analyze an alternative perspective on Manifest Destiny with a painting titled Indigenous American Progress, by Charles Hilliard in 2021.

Finally students will answer questions about both paintings when it comes to perspective, the context and the images or symbols that the artist uses to persuade the audience.
