About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities

SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:

Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency

Narrative Station to build science literacy

Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding

Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design

Synthesis Station and Project to inspire higher-order learning

The activities at each station in this lab are detailed below.

Formation of the Solar System Lab Learning Objectives

1. Discuss the formation of our solar system.

2. Evaluate the role of gravity in the solar system’s formation.

3. Explain how the temperature of the solar system and abundance of elements impacted the formation of planets.

4. Model how matter clumped together under the force of gravity to form the celestial objects of our Solar System.

Science Skills Station

Students will study the relationship between the distance from the sun and temperature. Students will examine the role of temperature and abundance of elements in the formation of the planets. Specifically, they will study how temperature influences the composition of planets and abundance of elements influences the size of the planets.

Narrative Station

Students will read a text and watch a video about the formation of the solar system. They will learn about the stages of our solar system’s formation and the role of gravity in the formation of celestial objects in the solar system.

Assessment Station

At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to the formation of our solar system. Students must employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station

Students will use construct a model of the formation of our solar system. Specifically, students will make a flipbook that animates the events that led to the structure of the solar system we know today.

Synthesis/Summary Project

Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.

This download includes:

• A pre-lab assignment and post-lab reflection

• Directions and questions for each lab station

• Student recording sheets

• Teacher Key

NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS

This laboratory satisfies NGSS MS-ESS1-2. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - to meet the standard. This lab also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

NGSSMS-ESS1-2
Develop and use a model to describe the role of gravity in the motions within galaxies and the solar system. Emphasis for the model is on gravity as the force that holds together the solar system and Milky Way galaxy and controls orbital motions within them. Examples of models can be physical (such as the analogy of distance along a football field or computer visualizations of elliptical orbits) or conceptual (such as mathematical proportions relative to the size of familiar objects such as students’ school or state). Assessment does not include Kepler’s Laws of orbital motion or the apparent retrograde motion of the planets as viewed from Earth.
