Description
Like many modern people, the ancient Egyptians believed in life after death. In their religion, the afterlife was a place very similar to life on earth; as a result, they began to develop the process of embalming, or mummification, in order to preserve the dead. They wanted their dead, loved-one to look the same in the afterlife as he/she did on earth. This was important so that the ka, or the soul, could find the body in the afterlife.
Mummification was a ritual enacted for over 3,000 years in Egypt. However, it was mostly the wealthy and powerful who were mummified.
The process had many scientific and religious steps. In this assignment, students learn the ancient process of mummification by making their own mummies with lemons.
This is a unique assignment in which students will do a little bit of science and a little bit of history. In this assignment, students will develop an understanding of the Egyptian process of mummification by mummifying a Lemon-Pharaoh. At the same time, you will conduct a science lab about the drying properties of salt, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium carbonate.
