What educators are saying

As it's a film that was produced a few years ago, it allowed me to introduce them to something new. The fact that I could choose the method of answers also enabled me to adapt it according to whether I had a group of 5th or 6th graders in ESL.
Great material for when we watch a movie, the questions are easy to understand for my ESL students, but not too easy! Great resource!

Description

This 8 page movie guide with handouts accompanies the film "Jumanji (1995)".

★★ Check out the full preview! ★★

This guide may also work well as a sub plan for your substitute teacher.

PART 1- This has 20 questions in chronological order. I have included 2 sets of questions for differentiation. The multiple choice questions will also work well with ESL/ELL students.

  • Multiple choice for the lower level students. (with a few long sentence answers)
  • Full sentence answers for the higher grades.

PART 2- This is a creativity section.

  • In the first part, the students are to design a board game similar to Jumanji. They name it, write the instructions and then draw it.
  • In the second part the students have to imagine they’ve been sucked into the Jumanji game and are now in the jungle. They have to write a diary entry for the first day spent there. Needs to be about their experience and what they encounter.

PART 3 – Storyboard and synopsis

  • Students to draw a 6 scene storyboard of what they believe to be the most important parts in the movie. To include a brief description for each scene. Remind students they can look at the movie questions to remind them of the sequences.
  • Synopsis. Using their storyboards as guides, students to write a synopsis of the movie.

If you don't already have the movie, you can purchase or rent it from Amazon.com

Marking idea for the comprehension questions

When the students have finished the questions, they swap their work with their friends to mark. We go through together as a class, taking it in turns to ask and answer questions. Students can also check grammar and spelling if more advanced, and then rechecked by the teacher.

Adapted from the book by Chris Van Allsburg, this movie is about two kids who find and play a magical board game. They release a man trapped for decades in it and a multitude of dangers that can only be stopped by finishing the game.

How can movies help students learn English?

Learning from movies is motivating and enjoyable

- Sometimes students need a change in style, and movies are generally an integral

part of a student's life.

Movies provides authentic and varied language

- It's always a good idea to introduce students examples of English in real

situations. This includes accents different to your own.

Movies gives a visual context

- This gives the student the ability to interpret the language in full visual context.

To see such visual supports as facial expressions and gestures simultaneously.

Variety and flexibility

- Movies can also act as a springboard for follow-up tasks such as discussions,

debates on social issues, role plays, reconstructing a dialogue or summarising.
