Description

This is a perfect introductory lesson when starting a unit on bias in the media/news.

Grade level: 5 to 8

Time Frame: 60 to 90 minutes

Included in this resource:

  • Full lesson plan
  • Three one-page news articles based around the story of the Three Little PigsĀ
  • Student note taking sheet about four types of bias found in the newsĀ

Through this lesson, students will revisit the familiar story of the Three Little Pigs as an introduction to the topic of bias in the media. Part of the lesson includes reading and analyzing three one-page newspaper articles about the story: one article is biased in favour of the pigs, one is biased in favour of the wolf, and one equally balances both perspectives. Through reading and analyzing these articles, students will discover four common types of bias in the news: omission, source selection, placement, and labelling. In the student note-taking sheet, a detailed explanation is given of each type of bias and there is room for students to write examples of each from the articles.
