Description

This unit can be taught as the primary unit of study over the course of a term or over the course of a semester in a more "Independent Reading" style. Although developed for honors-level American Literature students, the unit can easily be adapted to any area of literary study or literary genre.

The unit, which focuses of reading and writing about two novels by the same author, contains a detailed overview for teachers, an overview for students, and multiple assignments: an annotated bibliography, an analytical "skeleton" on one novel, a researched comparative analysis of two novels, and an author presentation. In addition to detailed assignment instructions there are multiple peer feedback sheets and task lists / grading forms.

Many of my colleagues have adapted this unit into their own courses, either exactly as it is in other sections of Honors American Literature, or for different courses such as British Literature, World Literature, and even as part of genre studies (poetry, drama, short stories). I have also modified these activities for use in my non-honors-level courses, depending on the abilities of the students. Finally, I have formatted the handouts so they can be adapted to your specific needs (leaving out references to American Authors wherever possible). You will also find that each of these assignments can be used separately or in various combinations with many units of literature study.

Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger.
Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects.
