LESSON 8

AIM: How did the Arms Race and Space Race drive the US and USSR apart?

ACTIVITY 1: DO NOW/GRAPH ANALYSIS

Students will analyze a graph showing the nuclear stockpiles of the US and USSR between 1945-2005.

ACTIVITY 2: TEXT ANALYSIS

Students will read a text and answer questions. Can be completed in pairs.

ACTIVITY 3: PRIMARY SOURCE ANALYSIS

Students will analyze an excerpt from a speech by Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev in 1956 detailing his point of view on US actions during the beginning of the Cold War. Students will analyze an excerpt from Robert D. Launius’ Sputnik and the Origins of the Space Age detailing Lyndon B. Johnson’s (then Senate Majority Leader) ideas and beliefs about the Space Race.

ACTIVITY 4: ASSESSMENT

Students may choose one of two options for an assessment/exit ticket.
