Description
Unit 6 of the Global History Curriculum (1750 to Today) covers an analysis of the world's transition from a world at war -- to one pitted between the conflicting ideologies of totalitarian communism and democracy. Students will assess the United States' foreign policies in response to conflicts stemming from the spread of communism in Eastern Europe and Asia.
-----
◾ THE COLD WAR IN EUROPE
Students will analyze the Cold War in Europe through a series of confrontations between Western democracies (primarily US, Britain, France) and the Soviet Union. Students will begin with the Berlin Airlift, the rise of the Berlin Wall, and the division of Germany.
Students will then evaluate American responses to the spread of communism through the Truman Doctrine, McCarthyism, and the Arms and Space Races. Subsequently, students will be able to identify the reasons for the establishment of NATO and the Warsaw Pact.
From there, students will examine US-Russian relations through direct contact and via proxy wars, such as the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam War, the Korean War. Students will also evaluate the policies of détente and containment throughout these conflicts.
◾ THE COLD WAR IN ASIA
Following the fall of the Soviet Union, the second half of the unit goes back to 1949 with the rise of Mao Zedong and the establishment of the People's Republic of China. Students will analyze his Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution before moving on to Deng Xiaoping's Four Modernizations and the Tiananmen Square Protests.
