Hiragana in Context is a way of learning hiragana in the context of selected hiragana words. Learning hiragana in the context of words is one of the best ways to learn hiragana. Students learn hiragana letters and words at the same time, with the intention being that it saves the time taken to learn the letters. Rather than spend a great deal of time and energy learning the letters individually students learn them in the context of words. There are 46 hiragana letters, which can be learnt in the context of 32 words. The focus is on the 32 words rather than the 46 letters. When students can read and write all 32 hiragana words, they know that they are also competent with all the hiragana. These words are then used in simple sentences, further developing student’s Japanese ability. Suggested cultural activities are also included.
