What educators are saying

My students worked in partners and did a great job with this activity! I loved the different texts/genres that they were exposed to and the inferring that they had to do.

Description

Get your students excited about reading! In this 3rd-5th grade printable Halloween breakout room, students will escape by reading four related texts and using their comprehension skills to solve the answer to a question. Your students will be highly engaged with the variety of real-life texts they’ll read and the puzzling way they’ll put together their answers to figure out the information needed to escape. This Halloween themed escape room is the perfect way to get students engaged and begging to practice their reading skills.

******Update July 2023*******

This Halloween reading escape room has been updated to match the format of my other seasonal reading escape rooms. Nothing has changed about the texts or activities; it is just how the page is formatted. In addition, the download now includes a pdf file of the reading passages that students can view digitally to save on paper and ink!

********************************

I use this reading breakout room with my fourth graders in partners. Many third graders would be ready to work through the texts and activities cooperatively.  Fifth graders could do it in pairs or individually, depending on reading ability.

****Please note that while most students will work fine independently and in groups, some students may require additional scaffolding to work through the texts and activities. Students need to be on at least a 3rd-5th reading level and at least be able to recognize/name the Halloween characters included (clown, Dracula, werewolf, Frankenstein). *****

In this Halloween themed Reading Escape Room, A Spooky Trick or Treat, students will read four connected texts that revolve around a community center’s trick or treat event. In addition to getting an escape room, the 4 texts you’ll receive could also be used as standalone texts to do a variety of activities and comprehension practice in your classroom.

The escape room starts with an informational/persuasive flier for the event where students will use details from the flier to answer true or false statements and use some math to figure out the first character needed to escape. Then they’ll read a to-do list from someone taking part in the event, an email from the participant to the event coordinator, and a portion of a story used during the event.

Each text in the breakout room will require students to think through details of realistic nonfiction texts, and then use various reading skills to acquire characters for their answer card. Once they have all 4 characters they will show it to you to see if they have escaped.

Not only will they be exposed to a variety of everyday texts, the challenges they’ll complete will test their skills on inferring, context clues, vocabulary, and more. There is even a little bit of math involved as students crack the codes to escape.

Students love escape rooms because they are fun and challenging. But if you’re like me, you may not have access to fancy locks and keys. That doesn’t mean your students have to miss out!  This breakout room will still get them reading and having a blast, but without all those extra materials you probably don’t have.

When you download this resource you’ll get everything you need for a full class activity of reading fun.

The download includes:

  • Teacher instructions
  • Student instructions
  • Student answer recording sheet
  • 4 texts all related to the the same Halloween event
  • 4 challenges that students will use comprehension skills to solve
  • Congratulatory display page for students that escape
  • Answer keys for all challenges

I know you have very little extra time to prepare immersive activities like this for your students. So I’ve made this as easy as possible. You can do this activity by simply printing the texts and challenges for your students! You’ll have a fun reading activity ready to go in just minutes. Your students will have so much fun they won’t even realize you’ve got them practicing all those important reading skills they’ve learned.

If you decide to do this breakout room with your class, I would love to hear about it! Leave me a review and let me know how this escape room went for you! Check out my store, Teaching from the Valley, for more escape rooms and other reading resources.
