    Description

Teach an engaging and rigorous Frankenstein unit with the intro resources, reading questions, quizzes, worksheets, wrap-up assignments and more included in this bundle! You'll get everything you need to ensure that students comprehend the complex details and connect with the classic issues of the novel.

    Completely revised in 2023!

    What's included:

    1. Pre- and Post-Reading Check-in: Kick off and conclude your Frankenstein unit with engaging discussions! For the pre-reading part of this resource, students respond to five provocative statements related to the themes of Frankenstein by identifying whether they agree or disagree and explaining their opinions. For the post-reading part, students return to each statement to identify how the issue surfaces throughout Frankenstein. Then, they write a longer response to draw connections between one of those issues and a modern problem. Teacher's guide included!
    2. Introductory slides: This presentation provides background and images related to Mary Shelley's biography, the literary and historical influences on the Frankenstein text, characteristics of British Romanticism, characteristics of gothic literature, misconceptions about the novel, and a diagram explaining the structure of the novel's frame tale.
    3. Study Packet: This comprehensive Frankenstein Study Packet will serve as the anchor of your unit! It will keep students on track while they read and structure your in-class discussions. It includes: 240 Reading Questions to help students follow the plot and prepare for quizzes, explanations of literary allusions and important historical events that influenced the novel, 66 Discussion Questions following each chapter that will guide your in-class review of each reading assignment and help students make connections to real life issues and track themes and motifs, a theme and motif reference sheet, Wrap-Up Questions, and a detailed teacher's guide.
    4. Quizzes: 8 multiple-choice reading check quizzes on the following Frankenstein chapter chunks: Letters 1–4 (8 questions), Chapters 1–3 (13 questions), Chapters 4–6 (10 questions), Chapters 7–10 (9 questions), Chapters 11–14 (12 questions), Chapters 15–16 (13 questions), Chapters 17–21 (11 questions), and Chapters 22–24 (11 questions). Answer keys included!
    5. Nature vs. Nurture worksheet: This Frankenstein worksheet is an engaging way to get students interested in the novel's exploration of the nature vs. nurture debate. It includes: a brief introduction to the “nature” and “nurture” views, a table with prompts for students to identify their traits that they believe are genetic and the traits they believe have developed through their experiences, and 5 questions that guide students to examine how nature and nurture affect the creature in the novel and people in the real world. A teacher's guide is included.
    6. Foils in Frankenstein worksheet: The worksheet guides students to identify similarities and differences that 6 characters have with Victor Frankenstein, identify similarities that the women characters in the novel share, explain what the foils in Frankenstein help us notice about the characters and people in real life, and make a real life connection by explaining how someone they know has helped them notice one of their own characteristics. A detailed answer key is included!
    7. Theme and Motif Analysis assignment: This assignment offers an efficient way for students to connect the big ideas of the novel to current issues. The assignment guides students to identify a theme of Frankenstein that highlights an issue we face in society today, provide relevant quotations from the novel, and explain why the quotations still resonate; explain ideas that they believe Mary Shelley would have wanted readers to take away; and explain how a memorable motif supports the development of one of the novel's themes. A detailed teacher's guide that provides ideas for modern issues that align with the themes—and more!
    8. What Makes Us Human? assignment: A major question of the novel is why humans do not accept the creature as another human. For this assignment, students do a freewrite about what they believe defines a human. Then, they locate three online sources that engage with that question and record their findings. Considering their initial opinions along with their research, students identify what they see as five essential characteristics of being human, and make a final assessment about whether the creature can be considered a human. This assignment is best used after the students finish the novel. It can be used as a homework or in-class assignment, and can produce a lengthy discussion! A rubric is included.
    9. Frankenfolio Final Project: In this fun-yet-challenging final project for Frankenstein, students choose from a menu of options create a small portfolio of four components: a visual that represents an aspect of the novel, a short creative writing piece, a literary analysis worksheet that guides students to examine a pertinent topic, and a list of examples from the novel that fit a relevant category. There are four options in each category! Any of the options could be used as individual assignments. Students can complete the project independently or in small groups.
    10. Teacher pacing guide: This sample sequence identifies approximate timeframes for assignments and distinguishes in-class and homework assignments.

This bundle is a turnkey Frankenstein unit that will save you many hours of prep!
