Description

Plan a Winter Warmer Party with your students! Differentiated decimal operations project! Project Based Learning! Decimal Addition and Subtraction! Decimal Multiplication and Division! Fifth and Sixth grade math project with Digital project option included! Google Slides versions included! Winter Math! Holiday Math!

Brr! It's cold outside! Help your students warm up by planning a Winter Warmer Party using their decimal addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills!

This project is great for students to work on as an independent early finisher enrichment activity, during math centers, or during small group instruction in the winter or around the holidays! It is a great application/enrichment project! It reinforces addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of decimals as well as single and multi-step story problem solving strategies. It also includes some measurement conversion (with conversion key) as well as an extension about percentages.

Students choose the number of guests to invite to the party so they can do the same project again and again and the answers will be different depending on the number of guests they invite! The number of guests becomes the factor that they multiply by, so you can help students choose a number that is most appropriate for them. This differentiates the project to make it more challenging or less challenging

It is perfect for fifth grade students or sixth grade students working on application of decimal operations. It is aligned to standards 5.NBT.B.5, 5.NBT.B.7, 5.MD.A.1, 6.NS.B.3 and 6.RP.A.3C. This is a fun and engaging project where students get to plan their own Winter Warmer Party! There are 5 parts to the project including sending invitations, planning decorations, food and drink and games, as well as finding the total cost at the end. There are 25 total questions in this project, some are single-step and some are multi-step problems similar to a math task.

There is also one extension included which includes percentages and decimal operations.

This project is very flexible and can be used many different ways to work well within your math block. The duration of this project is approximately one week of independent math practice time. However, you can make this project faster by putting students into groups and having each student plan a part of the party. You can also extend the project by having students complete it individually and/or plan an actual Winter Warmer Party for your class!

This project includes:

  • A 14 page project (with 5 different parts, invite guests, decorations, food & drink, games and total cost). Includes a real recipe for Hot Cocoa Bombs as well as fun winter game ideas!
  • A 2 page project extension
  • A printable and digital version of the project
  • An answer key (note: the answer key includes most answers but does not include every answer because some answers depend on student choices).

Skills included in this project are:

  • Decimal addition and subtraction (to hundredths)
  • Decimal multiplication and division (to hundredths)
  • Whole number multiplication
  • Measurement conversion (with key)
  • Single-step problem solving
  • Multi-step math story problems
  • Math tasks
  • Extension includes percentages
  • Money
