SAVE 20% BY PURCHASING THESE RESOURCES IN A BUNDLE! Set your students up for success this Winter Season with these engaging seasonal resources!

The weeks before and after winter break are very exciting for students as they look forward to, and share stories from their winter celebrations. It can be hard to find math resources that are aligned to the standards and also keep students engaged during this exciting time which is why I made these resources. The word problems in the project and story problems all lend themselves to visual models and are very helpful for teaching other problem-solving strategies such as labeling and finding the unknown.

The word problems and fluency practice in all included resources focus on decimal and fraction multiplication and division, as well as addition/subtraction and mixed-operation story problems.

    This BUNDLE includes:

    • Three winter seasonal & differentiated math resources
      • One Winter Warmer Plan a Party Project (16 pages)--digital and printable
      • One Differentiated Winter Math Story Problem Resource (Each page is a fun seasonal theme, and includes seasonal-themed word problems) 3 different levels and 12 questions per level--digital and printable
      • One Snowman Solutions decimal multiplication and division fluency practice resource (50 pages)--printable
      • An answer key for every page.

Description of the Winter Warmer Party Project:

Students choose the number of guests to invite to the party so they can do the same project again and again and the answers will be different depending on the number of guests they invite! The number of guests becomes the factor that they multiply by, so you can help students choose a number that is most appropriate for them. This differentiates the project to make it more challenging or less challenging

It is perfect for fifth grade students or sixth grade students working on application of decimal operations. It is aligned to standards 5.NBT.B.5, 5.NBT.B.7, 5.MD.A.1, 6.NS.B.3 and 6.RP.A.3C. This is a fun and engaging project where students get to plan their own Winter Warmer Party! There are 5 parts to the project including sending invitations, planning decorations, food and drink and games, as well as finding the total cost at the end. There are 25 total questions in this project, some are single-step and some are multi-step problems similar to a math task.

There is also one extension included which includes percentages and decimal operations.

This project is very flexible and can be used many different ways to work well within your math block. The duration of this project is approximately one week of independent math practice time. However, you can make this project faster by putting students into groups and having each student plan a part of the party. You can also extend the project by having students complete it individually and/or plan an actual Winter Warmer Party for your class!

    This project includes:

    • A 14 page project (with 5 different parts, invite guests, decorations, food & drink, games and total cost). Includes a real recipe for Hot Cocoa Bombs as well as fun winter game ideas!
    • A 2 page project extension
    • A printable and digital version of the project
    • An answer key (note: the answer key includes most answers but does not include every answer because some answers depend on student choices).

Skills included in this project are:

    • Decimal addition and subtraction (to hundredths)
    • Decimal multiplication and division (to hundredths)
    • Whole number multiplication
    • Measurement conversion (with key)
    • Single-step problem solving
    • Multi-step math story problems
    • Math tasks
    • Extension includes percentages
    • Money

Description of the Winter Math Story Problems Resource:

These word problems are differentiated with three different versions so that you can work on problem solving skills with your students at all levels! Use this simple guide to determine which set of problems is best for each student. Just look for the level icon at the top of each page. All levels are aligned to standards 5.NBT.B.7, 5.NF.A.2, 5.NF.B.3, 5.NF.B6 and 5.NF.B.7 (and level 3 is aligned to 5.MD.A.1). A description of each level is listed below.

    • Single Mitten: basic problem-solving skills. Mostly single-step word problems with a few two-step problems. Multiplication and division of decimals to the tenths. Fraction addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with friendly denominators. Division with unit fractions. All problems can be solved using concrete visual models.
    • Double Mitten: intermediate problem-solving skills. Single and multi-step word problems. Mixed word problem structure of operations with whole numbers and decimals to the hundredths with multiplicative compare and division. Multi-step word problems with all four operations with fractions (unit fractions used in fraction division). Bar models, concrete visuals models as well as more abstract models can be used.
    • Snowflake: advanced problem-solving skills. Multi-step word problems. Mixed word problem structures with unknown in all places as well as compare problems, most which require bar models to solve. Operations on decimals to the hundredths. Most multi-step problems are two and three-step problems. Fraction addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as mixed-operation problems. Measurement conversion included in many problems.

    This resource includes

    • Four pages of word problems for each level (3 challenging word problems per page) (a total of 12 questions per level) (entire resource includes 36 unique story problems, and 12 total pages).
    • Each page is a fun Winter theme, and includes Winter-themed word problems
    • An answer key for every page
    • A PDF printable version as well as a digital Power Point (.pptx) AND LINKS TO GOOGLE SLIDES VERSIONS OF EACH LEVEL!

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems.
Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.
Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator (𝘢/𝘣 = 𝘢 ÷ 𝘣). Solve word problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. For example, interpret 3/4 as the result of dividing 3 by 4, noting that 3/4 multiplied by 4 equals 3, and that when 3 wholes are shared equally among 4 people each person has a share of size 3/4. If 9 people want to share a 50-pound sack of rice equally by weight, how many pounds of rice should each person get? Between what two whole numbers does your answer lie?
