Description

Activate student investigation with this hands-on exponents and radicals vocabulary project! Watch students explore foundational math vocabulary with critical thinking, imagination, and collaboration. Math investigations direct students toward diverse approaches and outcomes leading to greater understanding and depth of knowledge. No two projects are identical!

Lead your students to discovering the properties of exponents before learning the academic rules. Student will demonstrate their understanding through pattern, sequenced steps, modeling, root word discovery, cartoon, and real-world scenario.

Understanding and retention increase when students are allowed to learn through inquiry.

Students will:

  • Select six vocabulary words from the ten provided
  • Choose one exemplar type for each of the six words
  • Define each word
  • Create a visual representation for each chosen exemplar
  • Construct a poster containing the entire project

You will love the easy prep … just provide copies and everyday art supplies. This product offers great flexibility, working well both collaboratively and individually. Use this product as carefree sub plans!

Your students will love making assignment choices leading to high levels of engagement and understanding. They will enjoy participating in resourceful mathematical discussions. Inquiry and discovery lead to greater success. It’s a win-win!

This project covers math standards related to both exponents & radicals. Students choose six of the ten key exponent and radicals vocabulary words, then match each of the chosen words to one of the six exemplar types. Students will then define and create a unique example for each word.

Students have the opportunity to use mathematical practices 2, 4, 6, and 8. Teachers can incorporate technology into the project or it can be done completely tech-free. Students develop a deeper understanding of exponents and radicals through this creative project.

Know and apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent numerical expressions. For example, 3² × (3⁻⁵) = (3⁻³) = 1/3³ = 1/27.
Explain how the definition of the meaning of rational exponents follows from extending the properties of integer exponents to those values, allowing for a notation for radicals in terms of rational exponents. For example, we define 5 to the 1/3 power to be the cube root of 5 because we want (5 to the 1/3 power)³ = 5 to the (1/3)(3) power to hold, so (5 to the 1/3 power)³ must equal 5.
Rewrite expressions involving radicals and rational exponents using the properties of exponents.
