Do your students need to practice building longer, more detailed sentences? Try this fun collaborative activity to stretch those sentences! Students practice sentence structure and sentence variety by making a series of small changes to a simple sentence to create one that is more interesting and full of specific and colorful details. This is also a great activity to give ESL students practice with sentence structure and grammar.

How it works: Each worksheet starts with a very simple sentence, and step by step, students work together to add to or make changes based on the instructions given. They will work to add details, such as adjectives, adverbs, possessive nouns, plural nouns, specific words vs. general words, synonyms, prepositional phrases and clauses (to create compound or complex sentences). For each step, they will note spelling or grammatical changes needed as they write their sentences according to the instructions.

⭐️ Reluctant writers can shine with this activity: When we ask students to add details to a very simple sentence, they often don't even know how to begin. This activity shows them step by step various ways to add details. After they have gone through all the steps, they can look back at the original sentence and see how much they have improved it. Through the process, they are also reinforcing grammar and language concepts, making connections, and putting it into practice as they work through each sentence.
⭐️ How to use this resource: This activity is quite versatile - use one at a time in small groups for a bell ringer or in centers and have students share their spiced up sentences. Or make it a whole class activity and work on multiple sentences at a time.
