Description
Students will run to class to check their eggs while learning about diffusion and how the cell membrane works with this exciting science experiment. Students learn about cells, diffusion, and how some liquids can cross the cell membrane and some cannot.
Click on the PREVIEW button above to take a closer look at everything included!
The science experiment uses a raw chicken egg and everyday materials to explore how different liquids diffuse across a cell membrane. This is a favorite activity students will talk about throughout the year.
The cell membrane is exposed when the egg’s shell is dissolved in vinegar. This lab is great for the middle school science classroom - NGSS MS-LS1-2.
Included in this cell membrane / diffusion science experiment resource:
P. 3 Teacher Tips (including a link to a YouTube video on how to create a graph on the free Create a Graph site)
P. 4 Videos about cell membranes
P. 5-6 Vocabulary and answers
P. 7-8 Cell membrane science lab experiment instructions & data sheet
P. 9 Instruction on how to make a graph
P. 10-11 Guided CER
P. 12 CER & graph rubric
P. 13-16 Student sample
Specifics: A raw chicken egg is placed into five different liquids over the course of two weeks (vinegar, water, water with food coloring, salt water, and a liquid their group chooses.) You will love the clear instructions, steps for writing a CER (Claim-Evidence-Reasoning), simple steps for students to create a graph, and grading rubric. Student samples of completed science lab reports are included as well.
Your science students will learn...
- How molecules move across a cell membrane either into or out of the cell
- How to collect and record data
- How to create a graph and drag and drop it into the lab report using a FREE online tool: HERE
- How to create a CER (Claim-Evidence-Reasoning) lab report
NGSS MS-LS1-2: Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function.
