Description

Explicitly teach your 3rd, 4th, 5th grade upper elementary & middle school readers how to decode multisyllabic words with confidence using this highly effective and engaging reading intervention strategy.

Science of Reading research (Ehri, Kilpatrick) shows that orthographically mapping word parts (morpheme chunks) helps consolidate the parts of words into memory so they can be read by sight, with automaticity. Readers are then able to segment and decode multisyllabic words easily. This is the most advanced stage of decoding - the grapho-morphemic stage.

This grapho-morphemic strategy teaches readers to spot & say the morphemes: prefixes, suffixes, roots and small base words in multisyllabic words, making reading gigantic words accessible to all! When readers are able to spot affixes, roots, and small words they automatically know, they don’t have to rely on sounding out long words letter-by-letter. This can be especially helpful for dyslexic readers.

Many older readers still struggle to decode multisyllabic words - hindering fluency and comprehension. Your struggling upper-grade readers wil build CONFIDENCE and INDEPENDENCE, EXCITEMENT and PRIDE as they experience success with gigantic words. Close the success gap quickly!

WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING:

"This is the most amazing item I have EVER purchased on TPT. It has helped me break through in teaching struggling readers. It all clicked in my head and my students when I started using this. Everything I have purchased from this TPT seller has been a game changer in my mild/mod 6-8th grade class, but if I had to choose one item, it would be this. My students are struggling readers and these resources have helped significantly with my students with dyslexia.

We use this twice a week, reviewing word parts, the sounds and practicing decoding words by their word parts on whiteboards. I also have students air write and I give them words to spell from a word part word bank (also from this seller). My students enjoy these whole group activities and see it as a game. LOVE this seller and I highly recommend everything she has created. I am really grateful I found her resources, THANK YOU!"

PLEASE NOTE:

This is a DECODING activity, with emphasis on readers’ ability to decode longer, multisyllabic words encountered as their reading levels progress. Study of Word Part MEANINGS is a separate vocabulary skill and is NOT covered by this activity.

PLEASE NOTE:

Words are NOT DIVIDED USING TRADITIONAL SYLLABICATION RULES!

This program DOES NOT use SYLLABICATION RULES to decode multisyllabic words. Rather, because multisyllabic words are made from morphemes (prefixes, suffixes, roots and base words) it employs a STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS approach, using morphemes to decoding multisyllabic words.

★Greatly enhances readers’ ability to tackle more advanced reading levels – particularly RL 4.0 and above.

Finding success with gigantic words even adults might find challenging is highly motivating for readers who have previously struggled.

★USE FOR★

•SMALL GROUPS

•INDIVIDUALS/TUTORING

•RTI INTERVENTION

•WHOLE GROUP

•SUMMER SCHOOL

•AT-HOME LEARNING

•VIRTUAL OR IN-PERSON

DESIGNED FOR READERS WHO★

  • struggle to sequence the multiple letters in long words
  • strugge to recognize or pronounce word parts in long words (prefixes, suffixes)
  • are not sure where to begin to tackle a gigantic word
  • struggle to successfully read content-area text that is at their decoding frustration level
  • struggle to successfully read fiction they would otherwise enjoy - because of the decoding challenges
  • are struggling to master rule-based decoding
  • may be losing confidence
  • will benefit from additional decoding support.

★RECOMMENDED FOR★

READING LEVEL: 2.0+

•This program is most useful for readers of any age who have achieved approximately second grade reading level or above.

•These readers have mastered many high frequency words, but may not have completely mastered beginning phonics.

•The lower the reading level, the more scaffolding and support will be required.

INTERVENTION:

GRADE LEVEL: GRADES 3-12+

Designed for struggling decoders in grades 3, 4, 5. The strategy is effective for grades 6-12 and adults, though the clipart level may vary.

WHOLE-CLASS INSTRUCTION: 3rd and 4th GRADE

This program is valuable for many on-grade-level readers in 3rd and 4th grade, as they begin to encounter many multisyllabic words in their reading.

Multisyllabic word study is

•helpful for many third grade readers,

•crucial for fourth grade through middle school readers,

•beneficial for struggling secondary decoders and

may be adapted for selected second or

•advanced first grade readers.
