What educators are saying

This was a great resource for teaching my middle school aged students with learning disabilities. It was helpful as it showed them how to break down multisyllabic words into smaller word parts. Thank you!
I have some 9th graders who struggle with spelling. This was a helpful resource that did not feel too primary for them. Thanks!

    Description

Explicitly teach your 3rd, 4th, 5th grade upper elementary & middle school readers how to decode multisyllabic words with confidence using this highly effective and engaging reading intervention strategy.

Science of Reading research (Ehri, Kilpatrick) shows that orthographically mapping word parts (morpheme chunks) helps consolidate the parts of words into memory so they can be read by sight, with automaticity. Readers are then able to segment and decode multisyllabic words easily. This is the most advanced stage of decoding - the grapho-morphemic stage.

This grapho-morphemic strategy teaches readers to spot & say the morphemes: prefixes, suffixes, roots and small base words in multisyllabic words, making reading gigantic words accessible to all! When readers are able to spot affixes, roots, and small words they automatically know, they don’t have to rely on sounding out long words letter-by-letter. This can be especially helpful for dyslexic readers.

Many older readers still struggle to decode multisyllabic words - hindering fluency and comprehension. Your struggling upper-grade readers wil build CONFIDENCE and INDEPENDENCE, EXCITEMENT and PRIDE as they experience success with gigantic words. Close the success gap quickly!

    READ THE BIG WORDS

READ THE BIG WORDS is a COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM designed to help you teach advanced decoding strategies, guide and assess your readers’ decoding progress and celebrate their success.

Select the COMPONENTS of the program that best fit your needs:

    Q. WHERE DOES THIS RESOURCE FIT INTO THE PROGRAM???

    WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING:

"Everything I have purchased from this TPT seller has been a game changer in my mild/mod 6-8th grade class. My students are struggling readers and these resources have helped significantly with my students with dyslexia. Students practice word parts and reading the word parts aloud. We use it in small groups and in partners to verify sounds. LOVE this seller and I highly recommend everything she has created."

"My students genuinely got excited any time we worked on this as a class. It can be used in small groups and even whole class when you use mini white boards (or laminate cardstock.)"

    PLEASE NOTE:

This is a DECODING activity, with emphasis on readers’ ability to decode longer, multisyllabic words encountered as their reading levels progress. Study of Word Part MEANINGS is a separate vocabulary skill and is NOT covered by this activity.

    PLEASE NOTE:

Words are NOT DIVIDED USING TRADITIONAL SYLLABICATION RULES!

This program DOES NOT use SYLLABICATION RULES to decode multisyllabic words. Rather, because multisyllabic words are made from morphemes (prefixes, suffixes, roots and base words) it employs a STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS approach, using morphemes to decoding multisyllabic words.

★Greatly enhances readers’ ability to tackle more advanced reading levels – particularly RL 4.0 and above.

Especially helpful for dyslexic and other readers who struggle to process multiple segments in words.

Finding success with gigantic words even adults might find challenging is highly motivating for readers who have previously struggled.
