✏️ Teacher Instructions for using this resource

How to use these Creative Writing Prompts for Middle School and High School:

In Zen in the Art of Writing, Ray Bradbury shares his musings on the narrative writing process. Stories exist in all of us - it's just a matter of drawing them out. One way of doing so is to pick a word that comes to mind and use that as the title or inspiration for your next creative piece. This Story Starters Activity facilitates just that!

Use these creative writing prompts for journal writing, gifted enrichment opportunities, snowball writing / "story chains," story starters, or as a part of your creative writing curriculum!

You can begin this creative writing activity by cutting out the prompts provided. You can fold them in a hat and have students select one at random. There are 33 prompts in total; if you have more than 33 students, you can duplicate some of the entries.

Students can then use this word as the title for their creative writing piece. Alternatively, they can create their own title and use their prompt as the subject of their narrative writing.

Set a timer for this activity or assign it for homework/during a work period. I enjoy providing a short period of time ( ~ 15 minutes) to encourage students to not overthink and to just get writing.

I find these prompts work best when students have as much creative freedom as possible. You may wish to instruct them to adopt any writing style for their creative piece. Some options include narrative, poetry, dialogue, and stream of consciousness.

You can continue this creative writing activity by having students write their own words to add to the hat!

Teaching Tip:

Pair this activity with a lesson on Natalie Goldberg's "Free Writing" rules from her book Wild Mind: Living the Writer's Life.
