Resources included with this Creative Writing Unit for High School:

    1. Narrative Writing Lesson - Descriptive Writing Prompts with Pictures for Setting

This narrative writing lesson teaches students how to develop and enhance setting in their creative writing using informational handouts and descriptive writing prompts.

You can begin this lesson by distributing the Descriptive Writing Informational Handouts. These handouts introduce the purpose of setting in narrative writing, along with answers to common questions that your students may have about describing setting in their creative writing.

These informational handouts also include writing strategies that students can use to develop their descriptive writing, including appealing to the senses, working on realism, and evoking emotion.

Students can practice their descriptive writing using the "Zoom" Method Worksheets.  These worksheets include 5 descriptive writing prompts with pictures.  Students can use the “zoom” method strategy to scaffold descriptive writing in their narrative essays and creative pieces.

    2. Punctuating Dialogue - Embedding Quotations Grammar Worksheets - Quotation Marks

Teach students about punctuating dialogue using these grammar worksheets, games, and activities!  Students will learn about embedding quotations and the proper use of quotation marks with these modern and engaging activities.

    3. 50 Creative Writing Prompts - Creative Writing Activities for Narrative Writing

This resource includes three engaging creative writing activities that can be used with middle school and high school students:

    • Provide students with the first line of their narrative writing using the "Sentence Starters" Creative Writing Activity.
    • Nourish students' developing ideas using the "Word Association" Creative Writing Activity, inspired by Ray Bradbury's Zen in the Art of Writing.
    • Practice proper integration of quotations using the Collaborative Narrative Writing Activity.

    4. Daily Creative Writing Journal Prompts with Digital Choice Board

This resource includes 3 weeks’ worth of daily creative writing prompts that are suitable for middle school and high school students. These prompts engage with diverse interests and skill sets, and feature topics such as sports, fame, space exploration, nature, and art.

Students will be inspired to take the perspective of a geologist, historian, artist, and athlete, and will also imagine themselves exploring a variety of situations and aspirations.

You may wish to assign a new writing prompt each day or assign all of the worksheets for students to use as a self-paced creative writing journal.

    5. Creative Writing Prompts Story Starters Activity - Daily Writing Journal Prompts

In Zen in the Art of Writing, Ray Bradbury shares his musings on the narrative writing process. Stories exist in all of us - it's just a matter of drawing them out. One way of doing so is to pick a word that comes to mind and use that as the title or inspiration for your next creative piece. This Story Starters Activity facilitates just that!

Use these creative writing prompts for journal writing, gifted enrichment opportunities, snowball writing / "story chains," story starters, or as a part of your creative writing curriculum!

    6. Zen in the Art of Writing - Narrative Essays by Ray Bradbury - Reading Quizzes

Celebrated author Ray Bradbury discusses creativity, authenticity, and the writing process in his collection of narrative essays, Zen in the Art of Writing.

Promote close reading and accountability with these daily chapter-by-chapter bell ringer quizzes for Ray Bradbury's Zen in the Art of Writing. This resource provides an assessment of students' comprehension and completion of reading assignments for this inspiring collection of narrative writing essays.

This non-fiction book study is a great companion to your creative writing curriculum, AP Language and Composition course, or Writer's Craft workshop. Fall into Bradbury's world as he captivates you with the musings behind Fahrenheit 451, The Lake, The Martian Chronicles, and other award-winning texts.

    7. Zen in the Art of Writing - Narrative Essays by Ray Bradbury - Reading Questions

The comprehension questions highlight Ray Bradbury’s key theories, formulas, and strategies for creative writing.  It also explores literary devices like motif, hyperbole, aphorism, metaphor, and personification and examines literary elements like plot and theme.  Students will also analyze and interpret the poems and narrative essays included in this text.
