What educators are saying

This resource was a great one to ensure my students were exposed to many different pieces of evidence that relate to continental drift. Thank you!

Description

This Google Sheet Worksheet is designed to assess students understanding of "evidence" and push them to determine whether 10 different statements are considered "strong" pieces of evidence to support Alfred Wegener's theory of Continental Drift.

Directions: In left column, determine if the statement is considered a piece of evidence that can be used to support a claim. In the right column, determine whether that same statement supports the idea of Continental Drift. In the notes column, provide reasoning for WHY this statement supports the theory of Continental Drift.

This is a great activity to support CER (claim, evidence, reasoning) writing! A very important science skill for middle school & high school students. After making a copy of this worksheet, upload it to your Google Classroom or send it to your students. Make sure to give each student a copy so they can click through and provide their own reasoning! This will spark some really strong class discussions about evidence and what is considered strong evidence!

Check out my Continental Drift Bundle for all items listed below at 30% off!! In this bundle, you will receive a variety of online activities that I also sell separately. Each activity allows students to explore Alfred Wegener's theory of Continental Drift and the evidence he used to support it. The underlying scientific skill that students will practice is determining evidence vs. opinion.

  • Analyzing Evidence of Continental Drift- This Google Sheet Worksheet is designed to assess students understanding of "evidence" and push them to determine whether 10 different statements are considered "strong" pieces of evidence to support Alfred Wegener's theory of Continental Drift.
  • Pangea Puzzle- These Google Slides allow students to "virtually" piece together the Continental plate puzzle pieces, showing the formation of Pangea and proving Alfred Wegener's theory of Continental Drift.
  • Continental Drift Quiz- This 12-question Google Form will assess your students on Alfred Wegener's theory of Continental Drift and the evidence that he used to prove it. Specific fossils, continental shapes, and mountain ranges are all topics included in this form. This form is editable so you may delete any questions that you feel are not necessary for your specific age group. Answers are already added, you can change the settings to let students see the feedback immediately after they submit the form!
  • Continental Drift CER Writing Frame- Use this resource as an accommodation or modification or to support struggling students who need the extra structure and outline to guide their thinking about Continental Drift evidence and reasoning. Bank of evidence is included!

Check out my CER Resources Bundle to save 30% on all 4 of the Claim, Evidence, Reasoning activities!

Enjoy!

Analyze and interpret data on the distribution of fossils and rocks, continental shapes, and seafloor structures to provide evidence of the past plate motions. Examples of data include similarities of rock and fossil types on different continents, the shapes of the continents (including continental shelves), and the locations of ocean structures (such as ridges, fracture zones, and trenches). Paleomagnetic anomalies in oceanic and continental crust are not assessed.
