Chinese New Year Zodiac Emergent Reader, Book, and Posters

Easy way to celebrate Chinese New Year in your preschool or early elementary classes! Learn about the mythology behind how the 12 animals ended up on the Chinese Zodiac. This packet has a variety of resources you can use for a fun, cultural lesson.


This activity touches on math, spelling, and writing skills. There’s even a coloring sheet to review the information! Most of the resources can be used in different ways, projected on the board, printed out, enlarged to poster size, printed on half sheets as a little booklet, handed out as homework, or displayed on your bulletin board!

☑ The Legend of the 12 Animals of the Chinese Zodiac
A 2 page printable of the story of how the 12 animals were picked to be on the Chinese Zodiac. Can be enlarged to poster size and displayed on your bulletin board.


☑ The Legend (Class Book/Presentation)
These pages can be used in different ways:

+ Print out the pages in full size and use it as a class book.. You can also print it out 2 to a page and give the half size book to your students to bring home.

+ Project the pages on a Smartboard or whiteboard and have your students read along as they fill out the pages in their emergent readers.

+ Use the pages as a display on your bulletin board.


☑ 12 Animals Emergent Reader (Individual Booklet)
This emergent reader is designed to teach your students the numbers from 1-12, the order of numbers from first to twelfth place, 12 different types of animals, and how to spell and write the names of each animal. The animals are in line art and can also be colored. Use this emergent reader with the presentation or have them read the booklet with their parents at home.


☑ Emergent Reader (Easy Copy Pages)
This format is to help you quickly make copies for larger classes. There are 3 pages per sheet. With this format, you can print front to back and save paper. If you print on both sides of a sheet of paper, you will use less than 3 sheets per student.


☑ 12 Animals of the Chinese Zodiac Coloring Sheet
This coloring page will be a fun way to end your lesson on the 12 Animals of the Chinese Zodiac. Recap numbers and the names of the animals and let your students color in all the different animals. This page can also be enlarged and used as a poster for your bulletin board
