In this lab, student's are asked to figure out who stole the teachers' Jolly Ranchers by using scientific process skills. This fun and easy to do lab uses chromatography to separate water based black markers to determine who is the culprit. I've used this lab with my students for years. After the lab is finished, I use the students testing samples, lab sheets, and an empty Jolly Rancher bag to create a bulletin board that wows observers. My students always get excited about which teacher/principal stole the Jolly Ranchers. Make sure you let your fellow staff members know what you are up to so that they understand the students comments after the lab.
