Description
In this activity, kids study a collection of images of various pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa). It also compares these to microscopic plants and animals so that kids can begin to get a sense of the categorical differences between these groups. Through a series of challenges, students are asked to sort and classify; identify images that have been colorized; compare the sizes of various microorganisms; and compare photos of models to the real thing. This is a great introductory activity to the study of germs, microbes, and the immune system.
Use this to learn and reinforce answers to questions such as:
❑ What does the word germ mean to a biologist?
❑ How do we classify microorganisms?
❑ Are all microorganisms harmful?
Once students try this activity, they can capture their observations using the included Lab Notes or probing questions included in the instructions.
Concepts Addressed
♦ Microbes are classified into Bacteria, Fungi, Algae, and Protozoa
♦ Viruses are not classified with living organisms
♦ Electron micrographs are often colorized to improve clarity.
Answer Keys and Teacher Notes address most questions and issues that might arise in this study—you shouldn’t have to do any outside research unless you want to.
