    Description

SIX Counter argument / counter claim prompts, task cards, model paragraphs

With such a focus on argumentative writing in ELA, English, and Social Studies class, my students really needed more practice writing counter arguments (AKA counter claims), refuting them, and formatting their counterclaim paragraphs. I created these six practice paragraphs based on the counter claim and refute reference sheet. There are also six model paragraphs, one for each prompt. You can have students begin by examining the models, and then have the students work their way up to writing their own paragraphs.

The reference sheet and practice prompts include- counter claim, refute, and working the counter argument into the third body paragraph of an essay.

This would work for any subject as long as there is argumentative writing involved. My students have been really successful with this method. Informally, I teach the counterclaim as the "turn against yourself" and the refute "as the turn back to your thesis and disprove."
