Kindergarten Standards-

K.W.2 Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.

K.W.7 Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., explore a number of books by a favorite author and express opinions about them).

K.W.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

First Grade Standards -

1.R.I.T.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

1.R.I.T.2 Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.

1.R.I.T.5 Know and use various text features (e.g., headings, tables of contents, glossaries, etc.) to locate key facts or information in a text.

1.R.I.T.7 Use the illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas.

1.W.2 Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.

1.W.7 Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., explore a number of “how-to” books on a given topic and use them to write a sequence of instructions).

1.W.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

2nd Grade Standards -

2.R.I.T.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

2.R.I.T.2 Identify the main topic of a multi –paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.

2.R.I.T.5 Know and use various text features (e.g., headings, tables of contents, glossaries, etc.) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.

2.R.I.T.6 Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe.

2.W.2 Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.

2.W.7 Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., read a number of books on a single topic to produce a report; record science observations).

2.W.8 Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
