Achievements of African Civilizations

The main goal of the lesson is to have students disprove misconceptions of Africa through the analysis of various documents.

A 15 slide PowerPoint includes:

There are three (3) different activity options, each based on a 6 document DBQ on African Achievements

Option 1: Achievements of Africa DBQ

Students answer the comprehension and analysis questions based on the documents

Option 2: Disproving Misconceptions of Africa Chart.

Each misconception is given a box. Students are asked to make arguments disproving these misconceptions and cite evidence and examples from the documents

Option 3: Achievements of Africa – Scavenger Hunt

Students search through the DBQ to find different examples of how Africa was advanced

· Version A: Students find either 1, 2, or 3 examples for each section based on the task

· Version B: Students find as many examples as possible for each section. They are asked to keep track of how many examples they found and total their final score at the end.

Full Keys are provided for each activity option!

This lesson has been adapted for digital learning. Students can use apps such as LuminPDF or Dochub to complete and submit the fillable PDF files.
